Vehicles & Transportation

  • Auto insurance covers the church's liability for privately owned vehicles used on church business and is excess of the owner's liability coverage, if any.
  • This coverage does not provide liability, comprehensive or collision coverage to the private owner.  See Guidelines for Other Vehicles for more information.
  • Any vehicle covered under the CPIP has the additional protection of the liability umbrella.
  • Coverage will be under one CPIP policy, with a Certificate of Insurance issued to each insured church outlining amounts and limits of coverage.
  • CPIP provides excess liability coverage for rented vehicles. Primary physical damage coverage for those vehicles must be purchased from the renting agency.

Managing Risks

  • CPIP recommends that you do not lend or rent your church owned vehicle to other churches or groups. Your church's insurance policy will be primary in the event of accident or loss.
  • Requirements for drivers to have a (Class B) Commercial Driver’s License varies from state to state, from as few as ten (10) passengers in California to the requirements set forth on the linked document, STATE MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS.   The minimum passenger count normally includes the driver.  Vehicles in the CPIP master policy are categorized by weight, and vehicle passenger capacity is not reduced by removing seats.
  • You are strongly encouraged to rent your short-term rental vehicles from a recognized provider who will offer you the Physical Damage Waiver Protection.
