Fire Safety Plan

Always begin by calling  9-1-1

  1. Always check for emergency exits when working in or visiting a building so you are better prepared to evacuate when necessary.
  2. When a fire occurs, try to keep calm. Remember lessons learned in  fire drills.
  3. Call the Fire Department at 911 immediately.
  4. If the fire is small, try to put it out with a fire extinguishes if one is available.
  5. Alert others in the building and calmly move to a safer area outside the building.
  6. If conditions permit, check bathrooms, furnace rooms, or other areas where people may not have heard the warning.
  7. Evacuate the area if you are in immediate danger, assisting small children and disabled persons.
  8. Once the area has been evacuated, check to make sure that all persons are accounted for.
  9. If in a room filled with smoke, stay close to the floor for easier breathing. Stay next to walls for direction.
  10. Before opening a closed door, feel its surface or doorknob. If the door is warm, there may be fire on the other side. Do not open the door; seek another safe exit.
  11. If you move from one room to another, close doors behind you to help contain the fire. Do notlock doors; you or others may need to reenter or exit through it.
  12. Do not run down stairways; keep to the right to keep space available to fire rescue workers.Do not reenter the building or room unless authorized to do so by fire fighters.
