Loss Prevention

  • Each participating church and church related organization has a financial stake in the success of the CPIP program.
  • Any reduction in claims loss expenses will help to lower and maintain premiums.
  • Risk management is an essential part of any insurance plan.
  • There are simple things that any church can do to reduce its risks.
    • Each church should have a safety committee whose task is to insure that the church facilities are well maintained, and free from hazards. See the self- inspection checklist.
    • Apply church safety guidelines such as in the sample safety plan. It provides an excellent outline of key considerations in the development of safety plans. Additional information is available from the CPIP Member Services and Risk Management Services Department
    • Complete and implement the property security checklist to protect church property.
  • The church needs to demonstrate both a concern for people and a prayerful stewardship of the church's resources.
  • Particular attention needs to be given to policies and practices covering sexual misconduct adult to/with adult, child to/with child and adult to child.
  • If your church is engaged in any high-risk programs, or has other high-risk potential which may cause injury or suffering, discuss these risks with your CPIP staff.
  • The Member Services/Risk Management Services Department of CPIP offers comprehensive risk management consultative services to all participating churches at no charge. Member presbyteries are encouraged to offer seminars and workshops made available through the CPIP staff.
  • Churches that have experienced excessively large or frequent losses may be subject to premium surcharges and/or increased deductibles, after consultation with the CPIP member presbytery and the congregation.
